A Valid Testimony. 1 Thessalonians 1:9-10.
Dear Saints,
We continue with the amazing story of the faith of the Thessalonian Christians, how others reported their exceptional commitment.
Reception (v. 9a). Not much is reported about the Thessalonian Christians, except that among those who believed were Jews, many Greeks, and several “leading women” (Acts 17:1-4). But apparently, they had received Paul and his companions in such a special way that others talked about it. It is a good testimony when others can acknowledge the significance of your faith.
Repentance (v. 9b). One of the most dramatic things about the Thessalonians was their conversion. They turn from idols and to the living God, a total change of direction. One of the problems we have with modern Christians is the tendency to hold on to former sinful ways while claiming allegiance to Christ. True repentance is turning one’s back on former ways and turning toward God.
Return (v. 10). Commitment to Christ brings with it the hope of his coming, which he promised to all who believe in him (John 14:1-3). This promise is predicated on the Resurrection. By raising Jesus from the dead, God was confirming to all that Jesus is indeed his son and that God sent him into the world. The purpose of this mission was; Rescue From “the wrath to come.” Judgment is coming. Humanity will be called to account for the evil and injustices that it has entertained. Each of us as an individual is responsible for his/her choices and actions. “The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23), so we can expect the wrath of God upon sinners, which is what we all are (Romans 3:23). But for those who have surrendered to Christ, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1).
What have you done about the wrath that is coming? Putting your faith in Jesus as savior is the only escape.
Your Loving Pastor Chris.
