Our Unequalled Saviour.1 Timothy 6:15-16.
Which he will display at the proper time – he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, Who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honour and eternal dominion. Amen.
Dear Saints,
It is clear from the preceding verses that Paul is talking about the Lord Jesus. But the language he uses here is clearly of the divine. Not that anyone should be surprised by this, since the Son is God, but it is worthy of note.
Display (v. 15a). Paul says that the Lord Jesus will display his appearing at the proper time. The time is set, no matter how uncertain everything seems at present. When it is time, the Lord will display his appearing. This obviously suggests some form of dramatic show, which is in keeping with other scripture that speaks of the appearing (1 Corinthians 15:51-52; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17). What a day it will be!
Divinity (vv. 15b-16a).The terms Paul uses to describe the Lord Jesus at his coming are all superlatives and exclusives. “Only Sovereign, King of kings and Lord of lords…” It is clear that the uniqueness of the Lord is incomparable and therefore divine. Note that Paul says “whom no one has ever seen,” yet so many had seen Jesus just two decades before! Obviously, he means Jesus in his divine glory.
Doxology (v. 16b).Paul ascribes glory and dominion to Christ for eternity. This eternal glory belongs only to God. But as we have observed, Paul does not distinguish the Son from the Father when it comes to divinity. That the Son is God and deserves to be worshipped is evident to Paul and the other apostles. We serve the living God, who became man in order to save us. But he will return to us in his divine glory. Are you ready for his appearance?
Your Loving Pastor Chris.
