Pastor Chris’ Corona Quarantine Epistles to the Flock of AIC Ngong Road, in Dispersion and Isolation. 86th. Edition.
Dear Holy Nation,
Having dispensed with hate and indifference in the previous passage, today’s passage (1 John 3:16-18) shifts to true love. Commencement of Love (v. 16). We would not know what love is, had God not demonstrated it in the sacrifice of his son (Romans 5:8). What the world calls love is either lust, selfish affection (that which expects something in return), or pure deception. God’s love for us brought him no personal gain and a very high price. Self-sacrifice is what love is about if we are to follow the example of Christ.
Contradiction of Love (v. 17). It ought to be obvious, but not everything that is plain appears so to us – if I have the love of God in me, then concern for a needy brother should come naturally. If it does not, I should question the validity of my faith. But this is not even calling for self-sacrifice. It only implying sharing. It is not a Christlike heart, that withholds from another in need, what we can spare. These are tough times, but do you have more than you need? Is there not a brother or sister in need somewhere?
The Confirmation of Love (v. 18). It is easy to say, I love you. But such words are empty unless they are accompanied by loving action. In actual fact, loving action often speaks loud enough, to preclude the verbal declaration.
True love is demonstrated in action that alleviates the suffering of others and meets their needs. Love in the heart must be seen in hands, feet, and wallets.
Your loving Pastor Chris.
