Fitting Conclusion. Galatians 6:17-18.
Dear People Belonging to God,
Today we conclude our devotions in Galatians. The conclusion is interesting because Paul uses a concept that he has not used anywhere else in his known writings.
Scars (v. 17). Paul begs to be left alone because he bears on his “body the marks of Jesus.” By this, he most likely is referring to the scars from the beatings he suffered when he toured southern Galatia on his first missionary journey (Acts 14:19-20). However, the word Paul uses for “marks” is one used for the branding of animals and slaves, as a mark of ownership. Paul turns his scars from ugly marks leftover from stoning to a confirmation of his calling to serve Jesus. Discouragement cannot triumph over such an attitude.
Sufficiency (v. 18a). Paul wishes them, as at the beginning, the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ. The whole letter has been about the grace of God, really, because that alone is all we need. The law and works have been relegated to the “tutor” position (4:1-5), only grace through faith remains. This simple statement, expressed as a prayer, affirms the all-sufficiency of grace.
Solidarity (v. 18b). Paul addresses the Galatians as “brothers.” After all the trouble they have caused him, Paul still loves them enough to call them brothers. This is the beauty of the love of God, that God loves us despite our weaknesses and imperfections. We ought to borrow a leaf from our God and from his servant, Paul, and extend the same love to one another.
Your Loving Pastor Chris.
