Prayer. 1 Thessalonians 3:11-13.
Dear Family,
We have seen how Paul and the other evangelists rejoiced over the news of the Thessalonians and their steadfastness in the faith. They now declare again their longing for a visit to Thessalonica. This is expressed in the form of a prayer, in which they also petition God for the spiritual well-being of the Thessalonians.
Direction (v. 11). Paul and his companions pray that God will direct their way back to Thessalonica. This prayer is based on the fact that they believed that the Thessalonians still needed their attention in teaching and encouragement. Probably because the environment in Thessalonica was so hostile to the gospel, the evangelists felt that the Christians there needed closer attention.
Desire (v. 12). The evangelists also pray that the Thessalonians will grow in love for one another. Times of persecution are the worst times for believers in some ways, but they also are times when true believers recognize the bond that holds them together. Love, not surprisingly, can thrive in such unwelcome circumstances. In a sense, love can be described as a desire for the well-being of others, a desire that leads to positive action. The evangelists remind the Thessalonians that they love them too. The example has been set, it is for them to follow.
Devotion (v. 13). The final part of the evangelists’ prayer is that the Thessalonians would “blameless in holiness.” The Lord is coming back and his saints should be found ready. This readiness is actually provided by God himself through the Holy Spirit so that when the Lord returns, he will find his bride faithful. It is interesting that it says here that the coming of the Lord is “with all his saints.” The word saint means “holy one,” so it could mean angel or Christian, or both. The coming referred to here is most likely the Second Coming, when Christ will return to establish his kingdom. Believers should be found blameless because they will be rulers with Christ in his kingdom. Are you ready for the Lord’s return?
Your Loving Pastor Chris.
