Quarantine Epistles 248

Good Example. 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12.

Dear Elect of God,

Living for God also has a lot to do with setting the right example for outsiders – those who do not know Jesus as savior. The Thessalonians were encouraged to pay attention to this matter.

Hands Off (v. 11a). The admonition here is that the Thessalonians will avoid any meddling in the affairs of other people. Everyone has enough to do and all who meddle in the business of others also neglect their own. Having an unhealthy sense of importance is what causes people to meddle in matters they should leave alone. In the words of “My Fair Lady,” without your pulling it the tide comes in. Elsewhere, Paul says that a person should not “think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment” (Romans 12:3).

Hands-On (vv. 11b-12). The Thessalonians are further instructed to work with their hands and be independent, so as to set a good example for outsiders. Part of the problem in Thessalonica was that they believed that Jesus was returning anytime soon, so soon that there was no need for long-term economic activity. People decided not to work and just wait for Jesus’ return. But then when they got needy and hungry, they ended up imposing themselves on others. We must be ready every day, expecting Christ to come anytime, but we must plan and live as though we do not expect him in our lifetime.

Your Loving Pastor Chris.
