Salvation in Childbearing.1 Timothy 2:15.
Yet she will be saved through childbearing – if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.
Dear People of God,
The verse we are dealing with is one of the most intriguing in the New Testament. At face value, it may seem to suggest that a woman’s salvation is tied to childbearing. Even more confusing is that the first part of the verse has a singular pronoun – “she”, while the second part is in the plural – “they.”What Paul meant to convey is an educated guess, at best.
Saved. The reference to the woman being saved is tied to the previous passage, which deals with the woman being deceived. An allusion to the pain of childbirth (Genesis 3:16) is to be assumed, so that this reference may actually be to a woman being preserved or delivered through the process of childbirth, despite the curse. Another possibility is that the woman will be “saved” through the pain, if her children continue in the faith, implying that the good results will make her forget her pain. Whatever Paul meant, he definitely did not mean that women are saved from sin through childbearing.
Sustained. It is not clear who it is, that is expected to continue in faith. It could be the women or the children. Perseverance is the evidence of true salvation and “the one who endures to the end will be saved” (Matthew 24:13). What is evident is that those who are true believers will not quit halfway. How is your faith? Does it buckle under trial?
Your Loving Pastor Chris.
