Quarantine Epistles 293

A Model Home.1 Timothy 3:4-5.
He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, For if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church?

Dear Servants of the Most High,

We continue with the qualifications of the overseer. We saw previously that he should be a respectable man. We now look at the home front.

Control (v. 4). The household in the time of Paul and Timothy often comprised more than a man, the wife, and children. Servants and slaves were considered part of the household. This household was to be managed well. This would mean that the rights of each person were respected, but also that everyone did their job. Fairness is not a favor we do for others but an obligation. Of course, children also ought to be kept in line. There is little that does more damage to a man of God than unruly children. Unfortunately, some people try to maintain control through threats and violence. Children should be trained in the way they should go (Proverbs 22:6).

Care (v. 5). The skills and attitudes employed in the management of one’s home life should simply be transferred to the management of God’s household. It should be noted here that being “spiritual”, whatever that may mean, does not negate the need to learn leadership skills and develop attitudes that are helpful in relationships. Ultimately, a Christlike disposition is a key to good leadership, but even Jesus spent three and a half years training his disciples. It will be helpful if we identify gaps and deficiencies in our leadership skills and get the necessary training to remedy the situation. Such skills will be useful also at home with family. How is the home front?

Your Loving Pastor Chris.
