Quarantine Epistles 301

The Task at Hand.1 Timothy 4:6-7.
If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed. Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather, train yourself for godliness.

Dear Royal Priesthood,

The instructions Timothy has been given are not just for him to keep. He is to:

Teach Others (v. 6a). The clear message here is that the gauge for him as a servant of Christ Jesus is whether he confronts the “brothers with the truth Paul has taught him. It may not make him friends to do that, but he must choose between the favor of men and the favor of God.

Train Yourself (v. 6b). To teach others effectively, Timothy must be fully conversant with the teaching of the gospel. He has been faithfully following the “good doctrine” but he must go a step further and master the “words of the faith.”

Trash Myths (v. 7). The alternative to training in the doctrines of the faith is following myths, something that was happening in Ephesus and was part of the problem of ritualism there. Paul calls such irreverent because they do not give God and things of God the respect they deserve. He also calls them silly, because anyone examining the myths in light of scripture should be able to see the folly of them. The way to avoid such is to continue training oneself in godliness.

Your Loving Pastor Chris.
