Quarantine Epistles 337

Handling the Word Correctly. 2 Timothy 2:15.
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.

Dear Servants of the King of Kings,

The personal integrity of the man of God is intricately interwoven with his treatment of the word of God. Paul encourages Timothy to pay attention to both.

Approved. Timothy is encouraged to do his best to gain approval. This is the approval of his character and integrity. Uprightness of character does not come automatically. We are called upon to strive for excellence, which requires self-discipline and the pursuit of righteousness. Spiritual maturity is the result of consistent, at times lifetime effort.

Not Ashamed. Shame is the result of failure to live up to an expected standard. If others expect a certain level of maturity and integrity of one but one falls short, the result is a disappointment on the part of others and shame on one’s part. But if one strives to grow in integrity and character, that dreaded moment of failure will not come.

Accustomed. The handling of the word of God is both a matter of skill and reverence. The right study and interpretive tools need to be employed fully – linguistic, historical, contemporary cultural context and the personal inclinations and temperament of the author, to mention but a few. But the word is sacred and must be regarded with reverence and awe. The noblest calling is that to proclaim the Lord’s word. To do so casually would be an insult.

Your Loving Pastor Chris.
