Standards for Elders: Image. Titus 1:7-8.
For an overseer, as God’s steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain, But hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined.
Dear Family,
We continue with the qualifications of elders. From family, Paul now turns to character.
Courteous (v. 7). For the second time in as many verses, Paul says that the overseer ought To be beyond reproach. This time, he must be so in his general demeanor. He must show respect to all people and avoid habits like drunkenness that would cause him to act with discourtesy or violence.
Controlled (v. 8). Self-control includes kindness and hospitality to people we would rather tell of. The overall desire should be for the good of everyone, including those we do not like, and is only possible if we are striving toward uprightness (righteousness) and holiness.
This is the real core of the personal discipline.
Your Loving Pastor Chris.
