Quarantine Epistles 364.

Standards for Elders: Doctrine. Titus 1:9.

He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also rebuke those who contradict it.

Dear Apple of God’s Eye,

The importance of holding onto the right teaching cannot be overemphasized. It is difficult to believe properly if we do not understand properly.

True (v. 9a). The pulpit is not the place to display one’s ignorance, nor to question the reliability of biblical teaching. An elder must both understand and believe the scriptures.

Teacher (v. 9b). The purpose of understanding and believing the word is so that the elder can teach it well. A church that is taught well is likely to commit to the Lord more dearly and will be harder to mislead. Understanding and believing the word is a must for the elder.

Theologian (v. 9c). The elder must not just be able to teach, but he also ought to be able to defend the faith against skeptics and critics. This calls for a wide knowledge of the scriptures and topics around what they teach. If you are not there yet, make it your goal.

Your Loving Pastor Chris.
