Exemplary Conduct. Titus 2:1-3.
But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine. Older men are to be the sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound of faith, in love, and in steadfastness. Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good.
Dear Friends of God,
The world may offer God’s people a lot of goodies in order for them to conform. Paul wants Titus to stick to the script and encourage others to do the same.
The soundness of Doctrine (v. 1). Titus does not have the option of going with the crowd and seeking personal gain. He must stand apart and teach what is true. If he has to stand alone, so be it. Populist preaching that disregards sound doctrine is not for the servant of God. He must not go for material gain at the expense of his calling.
Sobriety in Dignity (v. 2). Titus is to teach people at different levels. The older men as pillars of the Christian community ought to be level-headed to govern with dignity and set an example for the rest.
Stability and Diligence (v. 3). Older women ought to be of exemplary and dependable character. Their devotion to God should be such that they cannot be accused of such careless speech as slander, or the indiscipline of alcohol addiction. This will position them to teach proper conduct to those who are younger. It is important that every community have people it can look up to and who can give direction.
Your Loving Pastor Chris.
