Quarantine Epistles Vol 2:23

The Anticipated Outcome of the Appeal.Philemon 20-21.

Yes, brother, I want some benefit from you in the Lord. Refresh my heart in Christ. Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say.

Dear Saints,

As we approach the conclusion of this letter, Paul demonstrates to us how personal the matter regarding Onesimus is to him.

Anticipation (v. 20). Paul continues the argument in the previous section, that Philemon owes him his very self. Based on this, Paul expects that Philemon will refresh his heart by doing something that will be of benefit to him. The word used for heart here implies very deep emotions.

Assurance (v. 21). Paul is not desperate, because he is confident that Philemon will not only do what he asks but that he will do even more. Maybe Paul hopes that Onesimus will be released back to him, or that he will be freed and left to make his own choice, what to do.
That Paul is so confident of Philemon’s obedience is evidence of the man’s testimony. Can others count on us to not only do what is right but to also go beyond the call of duty?

Your Loving Pastor Chris.
