Blessing Children. Mark 10:13-16.
And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me, do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. “Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.”And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them.
Dear People of whom the World Is not Worthy,
That people brought their children to Jesus “that he might touch them” is indicative of the fact that by this time they recognised Jesus’ uniqueness and power to bless.
Impediment (v. 13). The disciples are protective of Jesus, either because they do not want him overwhelmed by the crowds, or more likely, because they do not consider children important and see them as a bother. Instead of serving the interests of Jesus, they serve their own and become an impediment to his ministry.
Indignation (v. 14). Jesus is upset with the disciples and rebukes them. He does not want their access to him because the kingdom of God belongs to the likes of them. Whom the disciples ignored and even pushed aside, Jesus elevates to the centre. It is important that we align our interests with the mission of Jesus, lest we be found hampering it.
Instruction (v. 15).Jesus teaches that to enter the kingdom of God, one ought to receive it as would a child. Children are conscious of their limited knowledge and abilities. They entrust themselves to the care of adults without questioning the motive or ability of the parent in question. Faith is about trust and children are the personification of total trust. Childlike faith is the key to the kingdom.
Invocation (v. 16). Jesus blesses the children and places his hands on them. The blessing was often spoken as an invocation of divine favour. Placing hands on a person was both symbolic of approval and if transfer. Jesus wants to bless not only children but all of childlike faith. Have you put your trust wholly in him?
