Quarantine Epistles 30

Dear Royal Priests and Priestesses,

Yesterday we saw in Philippians 3:1-3, Paul’s warning against putting confidence in the flesh. Today we continue in that vein, as we examine verses 4-7.Paul here presents his credentials, just in case anyone makes the claim that he is dismissing personal achievements on account of having none, himself. On the contrary, he says, he is top of the pack.

His Pedigree (verse 5) is unmatched. He had the covenant mark, having been circumcised on cue, on the eighth day. His bloodline was pure, so that he could make the claim that he was a Hebrew, with Hebrew origins, in other words, not a convert to Judaism. He had no Gentile roots. He also belonged to the sect of the Pharisees, acknowledged as the strictest interpreters and adherents of the Law (Old Testament). In verse 6, he claims Perfection in his observance of the Law. He even went beyond the requirements and persecuted the church, which was seen as an affront to the Law. In a manner of speaking, Paul is saying he’s as good as they come.

But he has Pushed all of that aside (verse 7). In commercial parlance, he has written it off, for the sake of Christ. Many people feel that they have “bargaining chips” in their relationship with God. Those with means feel they can “buy” God’s favour; many feel that the good they do must earn them some credit. Others even hope to “piggyback” on their parents’ faithful service. Paul says, “Sorry, it must all go into the rubbish bin.” Are you holding on to some “merit?” Let go. Christ must take centre stage – not only that, he must occupy the stage alone.

Your loving Pastor Chris
