The Genuine Gospel.1 Thessalonians 1:5-6.
Dear Aliens and Strangers in this World,
In the previous passage, Paul expresses confidence that God has chosen the Thessalonians. This as we see in the passage we are meditating on today is because of the way the gospel was brought to them.
Empowerment (v. 5). Speech. Paul and his companions preached the gospel to the Thessalonians. The preaching of the word is important because “faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. But preaching alone is not going to save anyone, because it is devoid of power and conviction. This is the difference that the preaching of Paul made. It came to the Thessalonians through the Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is he who made the difference in Paul’s preaching. In truth, there are no “powerful” preachers, only empowered ones.
Service. Paul and his companions distinguished themselves as men of blameless character. Even though it was their right as ministers to be supported by those they served, they worked to pay their own expenses and avoid being a burden to the Christians (2:9). They also proved themselves above reproach (2:10). The importance of integrity in the conduct of those who represent Christ cannot be overemphasized.
Engagement (v. 6). The Thessalonians were not bystanders. They got involved in the affairs of the evangelists. Imitation. The Thessalonians copied the behavior of the evangelists and in this way, they became also imitators of Christ. It is important that preachers set a good example to the flock because most will assume that what the preacher can do, the person in the pew can do, also.
Inspiration. In spite of “much affliction,” the Thessalonians received the word with joy inspired by the Holy Spirit. It is possible to be joyful in the midst of persecution and suffering because knowing that God is in control of the situation and will not let us be “tempted beyond our ability” (1 Corinthians 10:13) brings with it a sense of security and the assurance that all will work out for our good (Romans 8:28). This is only possible with the enabling of the Holy Spirit, who is given to us when we believe.
Your Loving Pastor Chris.
