Quarantine Epistles 239

Affection.1 Thessalonians 2:17-20.

Dear Apple of God’s Eye,

One of the things that come out very clearly in this letter is the great love that Paul and his companions have for the Thessalonian Christians. The Thessalonians are young in the faith and Paul would have loved to spend more time with them, to teach and encourage them. It was not to be.

Ripped (v. 17a.).The evangelists were “torn away” from the Thessalonians (Acts 17:5-10) and Paul and Silas in particular, had to leave hurriedly. But this separation was “in person not in heart.” The love and longing of Paul and Silas remained steadfast, as evidenced in their attempts to return and visit, but they were

Restrained (vv. 17b-18).Paul says Satan hindered them. It does not necessarily mean that Satan stood in their path and blocked it, literally. But people who stand in the way of the work of God and who oppose the efforts of ministry by God’s servants are being used by Satan. In the Thessalonian case, the Jewish opposition can be termed Satan’s agency. It is important that we stay alert to the possibility of being used by Satan to accomplish his evil and rebellious designs.

Rewarded (vv. 19-20). Despite the great odds against Paul and his companions, they would not give up on the Thessalonians. One day the Lord Jesus is returning, bringing his reward with him, “to repay each one for what he has done” (Revelation 22:12). The Thessalonians are the “crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at his coming.” So, despite the opposition, Paul can take to heart his admonition to the Corinthians, “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:58).
What is the focus of your effort in life? We tend to spend all our time and energy on things we will leave here on earth. Spare some time for the service of God and his people. This will pay eternal dividends.

Your Loving Pastor Chris.
