The Right Disposition for Prayer.1 Timothy 2:8-10.
I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, But with what is proper for women who profess godliness – with good works.
Dear Ambassadors of the King of Kings,
It is important when we pray, that our state of heart and mind is right before God. Paul addresses this and points out areas of concern for men and women, separately.
Peace (v. 8). It was typical for people to raise their hands toward heaven in prayer or toward Jerusalem (the location of the temple, Psalm 28:2). Paul now introduces something more significant than the physical gesture – holiness and non – violence. It is not the physical gesture that God is interested in, as much as the attitude and state of the heart. To quarrel with others, even fight, and expect God to be pleased with our prayers is wishful thinking. Of particular concern is violence and quarreling in the family, something Peter also hints at (1 Peter 3:7). Pray, but mind your hands.
Propriety (vv. 9-10). Women are told to apply three standards to their dress: respectability, modesty, and self-control. Paul is not forbidding personal grooming (as with braided hair), jewelry, or fine clothing, but rather, preoccupation with outward appearance. Vanity and the flaunting of sexuality will not help a woman get answers to prayer. What is recommended instead is good works. Paul is probably thinking of works of charity. Those would touch the heart of God, no doubt. So how are you approaching the famous “throne of grace”? Check your attitude.
Your Loving Pastor Chris.
